Carousel visitors are in for a treat! Artist Scott Harrison has carved a new carousel animal – only the second new rideable animal to join the platform since the Carousel’s opening 11 years ago. What is it, you may wonder?
A giant, glorious, blue butterfly. The butterfly will only be mountable by small children. But its wings will soar higher than the Bear bench at its side. The carving was inspired by a new novel, On Wings of Wonder, by Doug Cosper, which is to be launched at the same time.
An opening event, punctuated by butterflies in all forms, is planned for Saturday, July 17. The new ride will soar, books will be signed by the author (and illustrator, Doug’s daughter Anna) and a new entry gate will welcome riders to the wonder that awaits them on the Carousel.
Join in the fun! We’re planning face painting and some other activities for kids from 10 am to 5 pm. The Carousel is dedicating the new butterfly to the sense of wonder in children everywhere.
